privacy policy

last updated 5 june 2026

The short version. fenced runs entirely in your browser. The Markdown you paste and the HTML it produces never leave your device, because there is no server that receives them. We use privacy friendly, cookieless analytics to understand rough usage, you can switch it off below, and we honor Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control automatically.

01who we are

fenced is a free, open source tool hosted at fenced.dev, operated by Lars Holmström, based in Melbourne, Australia. For any privacy question, contact larsh.dev@proton.me.

02what we do not collect

03what stays on your device

To keep your work between visits, fenced saves your current draft and your settings (mode, theme) in your browser's localStorage. This data lives only on your device, is never sent anywhere, and you can remove it at any time by clearing the editor or clearing site data for fenced.dev in your browser.

04analytics

When analytics is enabled, we use PostHog in a cookieless configuration. There are no cookies and no persistent identifier stored on your device (PostHog runs with in memory persistence), so we cannot follow you across sessions or sites.

We collect a small set of anonymous, aggregated events: page views, and when someone copies or downloads HTML, along with the selected mode. We never receive your document content. PostHog may derive a coarse, approximate location from the network request, and our project is configured to discard client IP data.

Analytics events are processed by PostHog Inc. in the United States. If you are in the EU or UK, this is an international transfer, and our legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding aggregate usage of a free tool. You can object at any time using Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control, or the opt out below.

05do not track and global privacy control

If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, fenced never loads analytics at all. Nothing is requested, and no events are sent.

06opt out on this device

You can also turn analytics off just for this browser. This preference is stored locally.

07your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Act and Australian Privacy Principles, and under the GDPR and UK GDPR for visitors in the EU and UK, you have rights to access, correct, erase, or object to processing of personal data. Because fenced holds no account data and no identifiable analytics, in practice there is little to act on, but you are welcome to contact us with any request.

08children

fenced is a general purpose developer tool and is not directed at children under 16.

09changes

If we change how fenced handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
